STUDENTS REFLECTIONS AFTER TERM 1
In first term I learned so much that I thought my brain would pop. I learned not only Islamic things but also things that I would always apply every day.
Maryam Gr. 3
My first term in AWIS was very fun, valuable and priceless. I even feel that my iman is stronger now. AWIS has actually helped me in school, I can write really fast now and I have no problems managing school and AWIS. Memorizing word to word translation is challenging and I like challenges.Iqra Gr. 4
This is a great school for muslim childrens. Teachers work hard to teach us the authentic knowledge of Qur’an and Sunnah, so that we can teach other muslim childrens. Asif Gr. 2
When we started this year, I was all tensed and stressed out about my school work and then AWIS work. But I made a schedule and alhamdolillah Allah made this easy for me. Sumaiya Gr. 3
I went to Islamic school before and I find this school better because here I learn the ideal way of living so that I’ll become successful in Duniya and Akhirah both.
Farwa Gr. 2
Last year I was really tough and worried to myself. This year I am confident and excited. If I don’t get good marks on my exam I will still feel happy because at least I learned something. I am prepared for any work AWIS gives me.
Shaheer Gr.4
what ever I learned here I always share it with my mom. Sometime I tell her things she didn't know before and then she learns something new like I did. Khadija Gr. 2
Beside many other things I like its uniform. I like this because this shows that we are here to read and write. I also like school library, we can go there to get knowledge when we need it. Hassan Gr. 4

Tell me about Islamic History
This is one of the most coolest books I have ever read in my life. This book is like taking a ride back into the Islamic world when it's glory and power was at its peak. I was just blown-away. If you haven't read this book, you are really missing you.
In chapter 4, I learned, the Jews and Christians, brutually oppressed by a tyrannical Visigoth king, Roderick in Spain pleaded the Muslims for help. Tariq ibn Ziyad, a Muslim African army general, gathered an army of 12,000 to save the Jews and Christians. He captured Spain and freed the oppressed. The Jews and Christians then entrusted the government of Spain to Muslims and so Muslims ruled in Spain for over 800 years.
I love this story because its shows that Muslims were the saviours of the world. We were the liberators of the week. We were a just and peace loving nation. I wish we can learn from Tariq bin Ziyad today and help rebuild a safer more fair world for everyone.
In chapter 5, I learned the Abbasid Khilafah fought and won over the T'ang Dynasty of China. I was so surprised to read that Muslims defeated one of the most militarily powerful and technologically advanced populations of the time. It is amazing. Muslims also learned the art of paper manufacturing from the Chinese and developed a printing press thousands of years before Gutenberg's movable type. In fact, Muslims carried paper and the knowledge of paper making to Europe. If it was not for the Muslims, the Westerns world would have no books, science, math or geography. Imagine that, Muslims are the founders of literacy and scholarship. I wish Muslim kids worked more hard at school and excelled in every subject so we can discover new forms of learning and understanding.
In chapter 7, I learned that Al Idrisi, a Muslim was invited by King Roger to visit Palermo. In Palermo, Al Idrisi made a made of Europe, Aisa adn Africa. Al-Idrisi was a geographer and vogager. How cool is that! At a time when the people thought the world was flat, Muslims were surfing around the globe, studying various landscapes and make maps and giving directions. SubhanAllah! I want to learn all the capitals of all the countries in the world, visist each one of them and tell its people about Islam insahAllah.
In chapter 8, I learned of an evil man, Genghis Khan who destroyed most of the Muslim world. Muslims were disjointed and disorganized so they could not knit a forceful defense against Genghis Khan's swarm of soldiers. They penetrated into the heart of the Muslim lands and burned, slaughtered and looted every person in sight. It was a complete disaster and a terrible loss. I learned how important it is to be united. Muslims were an intelligent people ruling the world with wisdom. Our lack of unity destroyed and and we are still suffering from this today.

Way to the Qur'an
Way to the Qur'an is a really inspiring and practical book. It divulges the benefits and etiquette of reciting and studying the Qur'an. I learned from this book that I must (a) isolate myself from the world and (b) devoute myself to the Qur'an.
Isolation or separation is necessary so that we can focus. Every letter of hte Qur'an is meaning, and incurs the reward of 10 good deeds if recited correctly. So it is important to give each letter of the Qur'an its right of pronunciation and reflection which is only possible when we have put all the distractions and chores of the world aside. I find it really helpful to recite the Qur'an in the morning, that's when my house is the quietest and my mind is the most awake and fresh to really pay attention to the Qur'an and let its message sink in my soul.
Devotion or loyalty to the Qur'an is also crucial in sense that we should be regular companions of the Qur'an. Read and study it consistently and make a point to follow its teachings always. Our lives should be dedicated to the Qur'an. I remember when I used to play video games, I was very faithful to my game CDs and I would adhere to all the rules of the game. But now inshaAllah Qur'an will have my full loyalty. Only the Qur'an will control my life and dictate what I do and how I spend my time.

Is music allowed?
What does the Qur'an say?
What did the Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w) say about music?
What did the scholars say?
The scholars said that the love of music and the love of Qur'an cannot be combined in the same heart. Meaning a person will either incline towards music or incline towards the Qur'an.
Umar bin Abdul Aziz (rahimaullah) said to his son, "I warn you again music, I warn you against music, I warn you against music! No one listens to it except that Allah causes them to forget the Qur'an." Meaning, the consequence of music is such that it makes one neglect Qur'an. Music destroys a person's faith in Allah, and his understanding and practice of Islam.
Yazeed ibn Waleed used to say, "Ya Bani Umayyah, stay away from singing because it will remove shyness and modesty from you. it will increase you in lusts and do away with your dignity, composure and respect. Music is like alcohol, it causes intoxication." A person who is addicted to music not understand how he is behaving and what he is saying. He is befuddled and enslaved to selfish and evil desires. He has no sense of shame in this thoughts or poise in his manners. He reacts on impulse and is easily aggravated to extreme levels of anger and/or depression. He is constantly conflicting with the opposite gender.
Umar bin Abdul Aziz (rahimaullah) said to the teachers of his sons, "Begin with instilling in them the hatred of music, which starts with shaytan and ends with the wrath of Allah. Music grows hypocrisy in the hearts the same way water causes plants to grow." That is, people who listen to music are usually two-faced. Their environment and their mood determines how they will react. They are emotional, careless, hasty and rash and therefore, disloyal and untrustworthy. Notice, people who listen to music are most likely to swear, lie and be uncommitted to their relations, school/office work and promises.
People of Madina said, "only the treacherous and defiantly disobedient to Allah listen to music."
Imaam Shafa'i said, "A sinner listens to music and his testimony/witness should not be accepted in any case."
Imaam Ahmed bin Hambal said, "music creates hypocrisy in the heart, and I do not like it."
Al Qasim said, "Singing is falsehood, a clearly unlawful and immoral."
Al Hasan al Basri said, "If there is music in a walima, then do not go to it." It is sunnah to accept the invitation for walima but if music will be played during it, then it is more recommended to decline the invitation.
A man was asked by ibn Abbas (r.a) if it was permissible to listen to music without lyrics, meaning only tunes and no words in it. He (r.a) said, "When the truth prevails on the Day of Judgment, which side do you think music would be on? The side of Qur'an, Salah and remembrance of Allah? Or on the side of falsehood and sin?" The man said falsehood and sin. He (r.a) said, "you have answered the question yourself."

- The people who believe that Shaytan is their enemy will avoid all paths that lead to him. Allah says, وَاسْتَفْزِزْ مَنِ اسْتَطَعْتَ مِنْهُم بِصَوْتِكَ "And incite [to senselessness] whoever you can among them with your voice" [Qur'an, 17:64] So shaytan uses his voice, meaning music to call people to disobey Allah and become deviant. Many songs, of old and new artists, if played backwards, contain blunt praise for shaytan and demonic messages.
- Music is conceited, narcissistic and useless talk. Allah says, وَمِنَ النَّاسِ مَن يَشْتَرِي لَهْوَ الْحَدِيثِ لِيُضِلّ عَن سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ بِغَيْرِ عِلْمٍ وَيَتَّخِذَهَا هُزُوًا أُولَـٰئِكَ لَهُمْ عَذَابٌ مُّهِينٌ "And of the people is he who buys لَهْوَ الْحَدِيثِ to mislead [others] from the way of Allāh without knowledge and who takes it in ridicule. Those will have a humiliating punishment." [Qur'an, 31:6] By the consensus of companions (r.a) like Abdullah ibn Masood and Abdullah ibn Abbas (r.a), لَهْوَ الْحَدِيثِ is music. Music is amusing but vain and frivolous, it deviates from the path of Allah, and causes people to become unconcerned and irresponsible to the Deen.
What did the Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w) say about music?
- Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w) said, "I have been sent as a mercy and guide to mankind. And I have been sent to break the flute, the tambur (string instrument like guitar or violin) and all traditions of ignorance."
- Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w) said, "People of my Ummah will drink wine, by calling it other than its real name. Merriment will be made for them through the playing of musical instruments and singing of women, Allah will purge the earth of them and turn them into apes and swines." Ibn Majah
- Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w) said, near the Day of Judgment people will make intoxicants, silk and music halal (lawful) when it is haram (prohibited by Allah).

Who is Allah?
Allah is الرزاق the Provider
For every person on the earth, for every animal on the land, for every bird in the sky, for every fish in the ocean, for everything that has life, even for the smallest worm under the ground, Allah provides food, shelter, protection, family and all other needs. He never forgets any one of His creation.
Three ways Allah shows mercy:
- Allah treats us with great kindness and compassion
- He answers our prayers and takes care of all our needs.
- He is very patient and forgiving
Who is Allah pleased with?
Allah is pleased with those who have mercy and those who are forgiving
How can we earn Allah’s mercy?
Be merciful to all of His creatures, and Allah will be merciful to you.
Be merciful to all of His creatures, and Allah will be merciful to you.
What are the favours of Allah upon us?
Allah has given us all that we have, the gift of sight, hearing, smell and feeling, speaking, breathing and writing etc
How can we thank Allah for His favours upon us?
- Become good Muslims (follow the 5 pillars of Islam)
- Remember Him and Praise Him (do Tasbeeh)
- Worship Allah alone and turn only to Him for help.
Tawheed vs. Shirk
What is Tawheed?
What is Shirk?
- Tawheed is an Arabic word which means, belief in the the Oneness of Allah.
- Believing that Allah is the only Creator, Owner, Provider and Planner of this universe. He alone has power to control everything. Nothing can happen without His permission. He takes care of all of His creation and protects them.
- Believing in the Most Beautiful Names of Allah Believing that Allah alone deserves to be worshipped. There is no true God except Allah and we should only respect and love, obey and honour Allah. Make duaa to only to Him and do sajda only for Him What is Tawheed?
What is Shirk?
- Shirk is to believe that there are other gods besides Allah or that other things/people can be worshiped along with Allah
- Shirk is untrue and unfair. Only Allah created us and Allah feeds us so only Allah should be worshipped.
- Shirk is in the worst sin which will never be forgiven
- Everything in the universe, the plants, animals, stars and sun that people worship are a creation of Allah. These things are weak and have their own needs, they shall die one day. They cannot create us or help us in anyway.
- A Muslim should turn away from everything and devout Himself/Herself to Allah alone.
