MashaAllah, great job Ladan and cousion Samira for winning a medal and a gift for Chopstick Pass Along.
This was the last and the most challenging sporting event of the day. The girls races across the gym while balancing marbles on chopsticks.

Alhamdulillah at Al-Fawz we love the competition spirit. The cheers and applauds from the audiences were especially motivational for the players. Alhamdulillah everyone went home a winner. We didn't just play to have fun, during the Olympics Br. Asharib encouraged us to continuously do dikhri (remember Allah) to plant beautiful trees in Jannah.

Our main intention behind hosting Muslim Family Olympics was to encourage communication between parents and their children. When kids are young, they are very keen to impress their parents and win their recognition. Sometimes parents don't have enough opportunities during the day to show their presence and love. Family Olympics  helped facilitate dialogue  and compassion between parents and their children.. They not only just played together, but learned to talk better and enjoy each other's talents.

Br. Asharib reminded the parents to raise their kids on reward and honour system. Give kids rewards when they wok hard. Desserts and video games should be privileges that kids earn for doing good in school or completing their chores on time. The reason why children today do not study enough is because they don't have any rewards to look forward too.

Br. Asharib explained that Imaam Shafaai became a Mufti at the age of 13. Early Muslim generation had a lot of high expectations from their children. We expect very little from our kids, which is why they perform the bare minimum.

Finally, the family which prays together says together. When we build a home for Allah, Allah will build a home for us in Paradise. Al-Fawz Academy is a home where the religion of Allah is studied. Please support it to support your Hereafter.

Once again... CONGRATULATIONS to all the Contestants and the Winners!
May Allah's mercy, guidance and blessings be forever with you! aameen

Tree Planting Trip

Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w) was a beautiful man. He was a spiritual teacher and a leader for ecological welfare. He was concerned for preserving nature. He participated in planting date palm trees and harvesting.

Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w) categorically taught people to live on less, to protect animal and plant life, and to worship the Creator by being merciful to the creation. He (s.a.w) said, "Planting a tree is a charity when humans, animals and birds benefit from it - find shade, shelter and food from it" [Muslim].

I wanted to share some pictures from Al-Fawz Academy Tree Planting Trip on May 10, 2014
Alhamdulillah we planted 125 trees at Jalaluddin Park at 490 Mississauga Valley Blvd.

Mississauga Park Personnel demonstrating tree planting techniques to Al-Fawz students

Alhamdulillah the weather was beautiful today. In general, April and May are the best times to plant in the Northern hemisphere, because the tree get a lot of rain and have all summer to grow.

The students were actually digging holes on a hill. It was quite a challenge to crack through the solid rocks. Carrying the shovels in itself was hard. MashaAllah our youngest students were proud at the end of the day for completing the rare Sunnah of Tree Planting.

First you prepare the hole for planting. Dig 10 inches wide into the ground and plant fresh roots. Ease the roots into the soil.

The tree hole should be a little deeper around the edges but there should be a pedestal of dirt in the center where the root ball sits. Spread wood shavings around the roots.

Students collecting wood shavings in buckets

Each student planted up to 7 - 10 trees each with the help of teachers and park

The wood shavings (wood chips) was used as compost and fertilizer. It contains an organic mixture that includes micorrhizae, beneficial fungi that enhance a tree's uptake of soil nutrients.

Depending on the climate, these roots will take 5 years to settle in the soil.

Great Work Al-Fawz Academy! Enjoy the trees as they grow over the years. Appreciate their fruits, shade and beauty. We thank Allah for letting you add 125 trees to the world and completing a rare sunnah.
