Tell me About Hajj - for Kids

Everything in the universe has a centre or gravitational point. The planets orbit around the sun, unable to resist its magnetic force. The birds have no choice but to go to and fro from their nests to the their feeding grounds to survive. It may seem that our day-today lives also pivot around the things that we love and cannot love without: our jobs, our kids, coffee and sales, etc. But the real attraction point for a believer is the Ka'bah, the absorption  point for Allah's love and blessing.

Allah pours His mercy upon His Guests whom He invites to His House to perform the Hajj. As they set their first gaze upon the Ka'ba, they realize that there is nothing and nobody there to disturb their thoughts about Allah. This is something which they were unable to achieve in their world of fragmentation, greed, and relativity. They were only philosophical about Tawhid (monotheism) but when they see the Ka'ba, the presence of the Absolute and Eternal Majesty of Allah is the roof of their feelings. The blackness of the kiswa penetrates into their souls with coolness and sweetness of faith. They recreate Hajar's path between Safa and Marwa as exhaustion and complete surrender follow the physical struggle and yearning to belong with Allah.
To visualize the blessings of Hajj and to feel solidarity with the millions invited to join Allah's family, watch
videos of the Ka'ba and make lots of dhikr. See image on the right for supplications made out loud by the Prophet (s.a.w) in the Masjid, home and streets during Dhil Hijjah.
Each time when you look at the Ka'bah and you make dhikr, remind yourself that:

(a) Laa ilaha ilAllah: Allah in His Glorious Divinity is all Alone by Himself. He needs nobody and nothing yet everything turns to Him and cannot exist without Him. Although the Ka'ba has no direction (because of its cubic shape), by facing Ka'ba when performing the prayers, you choose Allah's direction and face Him.

(b) Allau Akabr: You are so little and Allah is so Great and Grandiose.

(c) SubhanAllah: Your life is frivolous unless you aim is to approach Allah and see the Almighty. Hajj represents you return to Allah.

(d) Alhamdulillah: for the knowledge and resources on Islam

Helping Kids with Homework

As adults, some of us have really embarrassing memories of asking our parents for help with homework. With a little kindness, homework will no longer be a nightmare (equivalent to a kidney operation).

Here are some tips for parents on how to approach kids with homework:

1. Encourage curiosity and questions. Help kids learn by making them interested in knowledge: Who invented numbers? What ecological service do trees provide? When did Canada become a country? Develop a relationship of discovery with your children. When kids feel they can talk to their parents about anything, they become more comfortable in asking them for help with homework.

2. Turn everyday activities into homework. Teachers give homework and so can you. Include children in everyday tasks and assign activities such as searching newspapers, reading recipes, creating shopping lists, plotting out routes on a map, etc. Small activities can often teach big lessons.

3. Make kids proud of their effort. Getting the answers right is important, but it's only part of what homework is all about. Feeling confident and having fun is important too. At the end of every homework session, try letting your son or daughter know that you appreciate and admire the effort.

Muslim Family Olympics Winners

Al-Fawz Academy hopes to bring families - students and parents - together to spend quality time and share quality experiences. On April 27, 45 family groups and teams of friends played competitive games and had a ton of fun -  finding clues, shooting hoops, constructing paper mosques, racings while balancing marbles on choppticks = FAMILY MUSLIM OLYMPICS was a success alhamdulillah.

Alhamdulillah we had games for children and couples along with prizes and medals for the winners.

Shifa and Hamza received a medal and a gift for  Scavenger Hunt
Scavenger Hunt was a two player game. Each team received an envelope with a list of items which they had to find under 7 minutes. Shifa and Hamza were the sister-brother team to find all the items.

Rafeea and Muaz received a medal and a gift for  Guess the Word
Guess the Word was a two player game. Player 1 from each team drew a card and acted-out the clue written on the card. Player 2 had to guess the clue. Rafeea and Muaz's brother-sister team guessed the most words within 1 minute.

Faris and Uzair received a medal and a gift for Sharpshoot
After a tie breaker, the two-friend team of Faris and Uzair scored the most baskets from the foul line in less than a minute.

Br. Mohammed Ali (dad) and Ayyan Ali (son) received a medal and a gift for  Math-a-thon
The two player father-son team solved current elementary math questions including additino, subtraction, multiplication and division. Under 2 minutes, they complete 10 questions without calculator, internet or phone aids.

Br. Amer and Sr. Sadia were the lucky medal and gift winners forCouples Tournament
A special jazakAllahu khayran for the parents who came out and supported the Family Olympics

Sr. Samia and sons Uzair and Zayan received a medal and a gift for Paper Wars
They constructed a beautiful 3-D masjid made completely out of paper under 7 minutes. Their art-work received majority votes from the audience.

MashaAllah, great job Ladan and cousion Samira for winning a medal and a gift for Chopstick Pass Along.
This was the last and the most challenging sporting event of the day. The girls races across the gym while balancing marbles on chopsticks.

Alhamdulillah at Al-Fawz we love the competition spirit. The cheers and applauds from the audiences were especially motivational for the players. Alhamdulillah everyone went home a winner. We didn't just play to have fun, during the Olympics Br. Asharib encouraged us to continuously do dikhri (remember Allah) to plant beautiful trees in Jannah.

Our main intention behind hosting Muslim Family Olympics was to encourage communication between parents and their children. When kids are young, they are very keen to impress their parents and win their recognition. Sometimes parents don't have enough opportunities during the day to show their presence and love. Family Olympics  helped facilitate dialogue  and compassion between parents and their children.. They not only just played together, but learned to talk better and enjoy each other's talents.

Br. Asharib reminded the parents to raise their kids on reward and honour system. Give kids rewards when they wok hard. Desserts and video games should be privileges that kids earn for doing good in school or completing their chores on time. The reason why children today do not study enough is because they don't have any rewards to look forward too.

Br. Asharib explained that Imaam Shafaai became a Mufti at the age of 13. Early Muslim generation had a lot of high expectations from their children. We expect very little from our kids, which is why they perform the bare minimum.

Finally, the family which prays together says together. When we build a home for Allah, Allah will build a home for us in Paradise. Al-Fawz Academy is a home where the religion of Allah is studied. Please support it to support your Hereafter.

Once again... CONGRATULATIONS to all the Contestants and the Winners!
May Allah's mercy, guidance and blessings be forever with you! aameen
